How to cook in a dormwithout a stove
You don’t need a stove to eat well in a dorm. A mini fridge, a microwave if your dorm allows one, and a few simple tools are enough for real breakfasts, lunches and dinners.

What you need
- A mini fridge, ideally with a small fridge thermometer
- A microwave, only if your housing allows one
- A bowl, a plate and a microwave-safe bowl
- Measuring cups and spoons
- A small knife and cutting board
- A can opener and a colander for rinsing beans
- A few food containers with lids
Check your dorm rules first
Housing rules are different at every school. Many allow a mini fridge and a microwave, often with a size or power limit, and many ban hot plates and other heating appliances. Read your housing guide before you buy anything. Some schools rent a microwave-fridge combo for your room.
If an appliance isn’t allowed, don’t hide it. Choose no-cook meals instead: there are plenty.
Three ways to cook without a stove
- No cook: build a meal from ready-to-eat foods like canned beans, hummus, yogurt, tortillas and fresh vegetables.
- Microwave: heat ready-cooked foods like rice cups, ready-to-serve soup or oats, following the package directions.
- Overnight: let the fridge do the work, like overnight oats that are ready in the morning.
Build a meal in four parts
- A base: a rice cup, a tortilla, bread or oats
- Protein: canned beans or chickpeas, hummus, cheese, yogurt or peanut butter
- Crunch: cucumber, carrot, apple or spinach
- Flavor: salsa, lemon or lime juice, cinnamon or a pinch of salt
Pick one from each part and you have a meal. Taste before you add more salt or sauce.
Keep it safe
- Keep your fridge at 40°F (4°C) or colder. A fridge thermometer tells you for sure.
- Don’t leave perishable food out for more than 2 hours, or 1 hour when it’s above 90°F.
- Use microwave-safe containers, stir halfway and let food stand before eating.
- Wash your hands and rinse fresh produce before you start.
